Когда-то в детстве я прочел
Балладу о стрелках,
С ума по-детски я сошел
И бредил о лесах.
О тех лесах, где так давно, -
Легенды ведь не лгут, -
Стрелял оленей, пил вино
Разбойник Робин Гуд.
И будто меткая стрела,
Кольчугу мне пробив,
Засели намертво слова,
Разбойничий мотив:
"Сэр, никому на свете
Мы не желаем зла!
Один лишь Бог в ответе -
В кого летит стрела.
Так запевайте хором
В седые небеса:
Кому опасен город,
Тот бродит по лесам!"
То были смутные года,
И много истекло, -
Бывала мутною вода,
Бывала как стекло.
Бывало - сушь, бывало - лед,
Бывало - и потом...
Теперь сам черт не разберет,
И не отмолит поп...
Но чайки стонут в вышине -
Глашатаи беды,
Вода меняет цвет к войне,
И не отмыть воды!
"Сэр, я нигде, поверьте,
Не видел красной воды!
Вода эта пахнет смертью,
Не пейте этой воды!..
И может быть, очень скоро,
Большая придет Коса...
И странно умолкнет город,
И странно замрут леса!.."
Но от-т-трубилась труба,
Отбарабанил гром,
Пошла веселая гульба -
Бесчинство и погром.
И кто тут прав, и где тут суд? -
Молись, пока живой!
Ведь, может, скоро не спасут
Ни доблесть, ни святой...
Забудь о высших чудесах,
Забудь церковный гимн! -
Их целых трое в небесах,
А Робин Гуд - один!
"Сэр, никому на свете
Мы не желали зла!
Нас любит вольный ветер,
А Вас, милорд, петля!
С ней объясниться скоро
Придется, сударь, Вам...
Кого боятся воры,
Тот бродит по лесам!"
Я слышу - что за ерунда?! -
Что отступило зло,
Что, мол, исчезло навсегда
Святое ремесло.
Вас, как всегда, обманет слух,
Опять глаза солгут,
Но не спасет вас верный лук,
Никто не скажет: "Гуд!"
Мне часто снится по ночам,
И сон, как наяву,
Что я натягиваю сам
Тугую тетиву...
