Впервые издан в 1885 году в приложении к журналу "Радуга" с указанием автора музыки Я. Ф. Пригожего и автора слов - "Л.Г.". Под этим же криптонимом был опубликован романс на музыку Н. И. Филипповского "Песнь о духе" ("Он на скале сидел"). Никаких других сведений об авторе слов не имеется. Романс получил широкую популярность в исполнении Надежды Обуховой.

С авторством этого романса в сборниках полный бардак. Автором слов (иногда - обработки слов) часто указывается "М. Языков" или "Н. Языков" (имеется в виду не поэт первой половины XIX в. Николай Михайлович Языков, а его однофамилец, живший полстолетием позже); автором музыки - "М. Шишкин" или "Н. Шишкин".
Яков Пригожий (1840-1920) - аранжировщик и пианист московского ресторана "Яр". Он является автором огромного количества аранжировок и мелодий цыганских романсов, и для многих из них трудно установить, был ли он первоначальным автором или аранжировщиком.
Н. И. Шишкин (?-1911) - очевидно, имеется в виду Николай Шишкин, из курских цыган, гитарист и певец Соколовского цыганского хора; после смерти Григория Соколова возглавил хор и унаследовал родовую соколовскую гитару (см. Легенду о соколовской гитаре). В некоторых изданиях автором музыки указывается М. И. Шишкин, певец, гитарист-аккомпаниатор Вари Паниной. С другой стороны, аккомпаниаторами Паниной (1872-1911) упоминаются К. Васильев и Н. Шишкин (см. вводную статью о Варе Паниной в изд.: Очи черные: Старинный русский романс. – М.: Изд-во Эксмо, 2004, с. 59-61). Есть также Михаил Д. Шишкин - автор романсов ("Живет моря отрада" и др.). Из вышесказанного можно предположить, что всюду здесь имеются в виду два человека: Николай И. Шишкин (ошибочно иногда упоминаемый как М. И. Шишкин) и Михаил Д. Шишкин.

Under the same cryptonym, a romance was published to the music of N. I. Filippovsky "Song of the Spirit" ("He was sitting on a rock"). There are no other information about the author. The romance gained wide popularity performed by Nadezhda Obukhova.
