В индийских легендах и мифах Мритьюнджайя связана с именем Маркандейи — его учение заложено в Маркандейя Пуране. Легенда гласит, что Маркандейе было предначертано умереть, когда он достигнет 16-ти лет, но своим искренним обращением к Шиве, при помощи этой мантры, он одержал победу над Ямой – Богом смерти. Однако история эта началась еще до его рождения…
Живущие в лесу святой Мриканду и его жена Марудвати не имели детей, они совершали долгую аскезу в надежде обрести добродетель и родить ребенка. Они были вознаграждены видом Господа Шивы — Господь Шива выслушав их просьбу, предложил им выбор: стать родителями ребенка, который станет выдающимся — духовным светом, — но его жизнь закончится в 16 лет, или ребенка с долгой жизнью, но глупого и эгоистичного. Они выбрали ребенка с духовными достоинствами, и со временем Марудвати родила мальчика, которого назвали Маркандейя. Родители решили не говорить ему о сроке его жизни, но, приближаясь к 16 годам, родительская печаль все больше росла. Когда мальчик попросил объяснить причину их печали, они не выдержали и рассказали о том, что говорил им Господь Шива.
