Сплошные кости, кожа да короста;
Как дети, робки и боятся палок.
Они живут в гниющих недрах свалок,
Куда вползать и мерзко, и непросто.
Там есть прокорм — куски гнилья и рвани,
И можно скрыться от людей недобрых;
Испробуешь булыжника на ребрах —
Начнешь бояться человечьей брани.
Когда луна висит вверху, во мраке,
И купола мечетей над пустынным
Песком подобны яйцам страусиным,
На небо начинают выть собаки.
Воздеты головы собак бродячих
Туда, где только звезд толпа седая;
Псы до рассвета воют, ожидая
Услышать вой небесных стай собачьих.
Но счастье дверь пред ними не закрыло:
Известен страстный трепет — им, которым
Затем дано, таясь по смрадным норам,
Вылизывать щенков слепые рыла.
Терпенье! Дастся каждому по вере:
Молящийся, помысли о собаке,
О звездах глаз ее: в грязи, в клоаке
Живут и жизни радуются звери.

Dogs begin to howl on the sky.

To where only the stars are a crowd of seday;
Dogs are howling before dawn, waiting
Hear the howl of the heavenly flocks of dogs.
But happiness did not close the door before them:
The passionate thrill is known - to them who
Then given, hiding along the stench holes,
Lick the puppies of blind snouts.
Patience! Will be given to everyone by faith:
Praying, thinking about a dog,
About the stars of her eyes: in the mud, in the cloak
Beasts live and live lives.
