Однажды в час, когда туман съедал кварталы,
Бесшумной тенью он скользил меж фонарей.
Услышал плач — не призрак, нет, реальный —
И увидал дитя и Кота он у дверей.
Кот-Баюн, сказитель, ранен, хвост поджат,
А девочка в слезах пыталась всё держаться.
От толпы зевак, что жаждала кота на смерть,
И воин встал меж ними, начав... смеяться.
О, прохиндей... О, самурай-злодей...
И он смеялся в ночи, хохотал на всю пусто́ту!
«Вы меня боялись? Ха! Смешные псы!»
А про себя шептал: «Я — Тень Вспыхнутой Мечты...»

Всех лжецов порежет в лоскуту.
И когда стих бой, и Баюн замурлыкал сказку,
Девочке в ладонь он вишни цветок положил.
«Зачем смеёшься так, дядя?» — «Это просто маска,
Чтобы разум свой от нечисти укрыть.
Душа болит, дитя... И потому смеюсь».
