Славянофильство мне вспомнилось вместе с людьми, тогда еще живыми, после того как я вспомнил службу в Успенском соборе. Собор был полон святыни, и он был полон русской историей. Когда в нем шла служба, все это оживало, и святые на фресках, и вся Россия, страдавшая и радостная, умиравшая и снова несущая свою веру - свой Крест.
Однажды, наверное в 1914 или 1915 году, я пришел в собор ночью, на утреню с понедельника на вторник Страстной. Собор был совсем темный, немного страшный при мысли, что здесь стояли опричники Грозного в рясах поверх кольчуг. Что-то читалось, мерцали немногочисленные лампады, а потом вдруг с обоих клиросов начали сходить гуськом соборные протопопы в камилавках, священники и диаконы и встали в круг посредине перед амвоном. Их было много, человек двадцать, и вдруг они запели: "Се, Жених грядет в полунощи". Они пели басами (причт Успенского собора и подбирался по басам), и в их пении было что-то грозное, и в нем была все та же Россия.

Something was read, a few lamps flickered, and then suddenly from both clerians began to go with a goose of the cathedral protopopes in Camilacs, priests and deacons and stood in a circle in the middle in front of the Amvon. There were many of them, twenty people, and suddenly they sang: "Se, the groom is coming in midnight." They sang basses (the hairstyle of the Assumption Cathedral and was selected on the bass), and there was something formidable in their singing, and there was still the same Russia in it.
