Несложен будет труд на этот раз!
Себя самих за меру вы примите:
Пусть ляжет тот, кто всех длинней из вас,
А остальные д рн вокруг снимите
И, как отцам все делают своим,
В земле квадратик выройте под ним.
В дом тесный из дворца! Такою
Всегда кончают люди чепухою.

Когда я юн и пылок был,
Мне вс казалось мило;
Где пир был, дым столбом ходил,
Туда меня манило.
Но старость злобная меня
Клюкой своей хватила
И вдруг о гроб споткнулся я:
Откуда ты, могила?

(выходя из дворца ощупью, у дверного косяка)
Как звон лопат ласкает ухо мне!
Здесь вся толпа мой замысл исполняет:
Она кладет предел морской волне,
С самой собою землю примиряет,
Грань строгую для моря созда т.

(в сторону)
Лишь нам на пользу вс пойдет!
Напрасны здесь и мол и дюна:
Ты сам готовишь для Нептуна,
Морского ч рта, славный пир!
Как ни трудись, плоды плохие!
Ведь с нами заодно стихии;
Уничтоженья жд т весь мир.

Громаду за громадой
Рабочих здесь нагромождай,
Приманкой действуй, платой и наградой
И поощряй и принуждай!
И каждый день являйся с донесеньем,
Насколько ров подвинут исполненьем.

А гроб скорей тебе готов.
