Венская наступательная операция — операция войск Второго украинского фронта (командующий маршал Р. Я. Малиновский) и Третьего украинского фронта (командующий маршал Ф. И. Толбухин) в период 16 марта 1945 — 15 апреля 1945 по овладению городом Вена. На пути к столице Австрийской части Третьего рейха была разгромлена 6-ая танковая армия СС под руководством Оберстгруппенфюрера СС и генерал-полковника войск СС Йозефа Дитриха (В числе ее боевого состава был самый знаменитый 1-й танковый корпус СС «Лейбштандарт Адольф Гитлер») . И 13 апреля 1945 г. взята Вена. В районе нынешней столицы Австрийской Республики находилась крупная группировка немецко-фашистских войск.
...В одном из домов освобождённой Вены советские солдаты обнаружили почти не пострадавшее пианино. Кто-то из воинов, умевший играть, открыл крышку, попробовал наиграть "Венский вальс". Получилось. И вдруг откуда-то, словно из-под земли, донеслись звуки скрипки - играли ту же самую мелодию. Не сразу, но удалось найти вход в подвал, откинули завалы - и помогли оттуда выбраться хозяину дома - музыканту - со всей его семьёй.
Австрийцы были удивлены, что советские солдаты знают музыку их Родины. Но попробовали подыграть - кто на чём мог. Вскоре с улицы присоединился аккордеон. Потом гитара - это музыку услышали проходящие мимо пехотинцы.
А вскоре прямо на улице играл сборный оркестр - скрипки, гармони, гитары, балалайки, контрабас, то самое пианино - его вытащили совместными усилиями. Играли музыку самую разнообразную, пели, плясали - Вена праздновала освобождение. Cоветские солдаты возлагали цветы к памятнику Иоганну Штраусу.
Может, это событие и послужило мотивом для написания "Майского вальса"?
