Neverwhere is a 2013 BBC Radio 4/4 Extra adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel 'Neverwhere'.

Neverwhere is a tale about Richard Mayhew whose life is turned upside down when he stops to help an injured girl Door. After helping Door Richard ceases to exist in his world and he is drawn reluctantly into the mysterious and very dangerous world of London Below. Helped and hindered by the charismatic Marquis de Carabas, assisted by bodyguard Hunter and hounded by the terrifying Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar Richard must help Door to find out what happened to her family in the hopes that one day he can go home.

Отрывок из третьей серии Neverwhere (эфир 19 марта), ангел Ислингтон поет отрывок из "Lyke-Wake Dirge", старинной народной песни, написанной на североанглийском йоркширском диалекте:

If ever thou gavest hosen and shoon,
Every nighte and alle,
Sit thou down and put them on;
And Christe receive thy saule.

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,
Every nighte and alle,
Fire and fleet and candle-lighte,
And Christe receive thy saule.

If ever thou gav’st meat or drink,
Every nighte and alle,
The fire sall never make thee shrink;
And Christe receive thy saule.

Neverwhere is a Tale ABOUT RICHARD MAYHEW WHOSE LIFE IS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN WHEN HEOPS to HELP An InJURED GILL DOOR. AFTER HELPING DOOR RICHARD CEASS to EXIST in HIS World and He is DRAWN RELUCTANTLY Into the Mysterious and Very Dangerous World of London Below.

An excerpt from the third series of Neverwhere (ether on March 19), Angel Islington sings an excerpt from Lyke-Wake Dirge, an old folk song written in the North English Yorkshire dialect:

IF Ever Thou Gavest Hosen and Shoon,
EVERY NIGHTE and Alle,
Sit Thou Down and Put Them on;
And Christe Receive Thy Saule.

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,
EVERY NIGHTE and Alle,
Fire and Fleet and Candle-Lighte,
And Christe Receive Thy Saule.

IF Ever Thou Gav’St Meat Or Drink,
EVERY NIGHTE and Alle,
The Fire Sall Never Make Thee Shrink;
And Christe Receive Thy Saule.

If you gave the beggar boots, -
Eternal night behind the grave, -
Sit down, pull them and run further,
And the Lord have mercy on your soul!

That's the night! Night from nights!
Eternal night behind the grave.
City and fire and flickering candles,
And the Lord have mercy on your soul!

If you are the shore you are wine and kharchi, -
Eternal night behind the grave, -
You will burn in a hot furnace.
The Lord has mercy on your soul!
