The album was recorded on January 20, 1963 by eleven musicians. Mingus called the orchestral style of the album "Ethnic folk-dance music". Perfectionism, which produced Mingus, led to the widespread use of studio lotions and cunning overlays.
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is often characterized by jazz and musical critics as one of the two main masterpieces of Mingus (the other Mingus AH UM) and to this day the album occupies the highest places in the lists of the best albums of all time.
