Москва XVI века — время беспощадной борьбы дворянской опричнины во главе с царем Иваном Грозным и старого феодального боярства, «земщины». Между этими непримиримо враждебными силами колеблется молодой Андрей, сын боярина Морозова. Семейные традиции и влияние властной, суровой матери крепко связывают Андрея с земщиной. Но есть сила, толкающая его к опричникам. Это — жажда мести князю Жемчужному, разорившему и обездолившему Морозовых. Андрей страстно любит дочь князя — Наталью, с которой он был обручен еще тогда, когда обе семьи жили в мире и дружбе.
