Сраженный рыцарь
Последним сияньем за лесом горя,
Вечерняя тихо потухла заря.
Безмолвна долина глухая;
В тумане пустынном клубится река,
Ленивой грядою идут облака,
Меж ими луна золотая.
Чугунные латы на холме лежат,
Копье раздробленно, в перчатке булат,
И щит под шеломом заржавым,
Вонзилися шпоры в увлажненный мох:
Лежат неподвижно, и месяца рог
Над ними в блистанье кровавом.
Вкруг холма обходит друг сильного — конь;
В очах горделивых померкнул огонь,
Он бранную голову клонит.
Беспечным копытом бьет камень долин —
И смотрит на латы — конь верный один
И дико трепещет и стонет.
Во тьме заблудившись, пришелец идет,
С надеждою робость он в сердце несет —
Склонясь над дорожной клюкою,
На холм он взобрался, и в тусклую даль
Он смотрит и сходит — и звонкую сталь
Толкает усталой ногою.
Хладеет пришелец, кольчуги звучат.
Погибшего грозно в них кости стучат,
По камням шелом покатился,
Скрывался в нем череп… при звуке глухом
Заржал конь ретивый, скок лётом на холм —
Взглянул… и главою склонился.
Уж путник далече в тьме бродит ночной,
Всё мнится, что кости хрустят под ногой..,
Но утро денница выводит —
Сраженный во брани на холме лежит,
И латы недвижны, и шлем не стучит,
И конь вкруг погибшего ходит.

Slain knight
The last glow behind the forest of grief,
The evening dawn quietly faded.
The deaf valley is silent;
The river swirls in the desert fog,
The clouds are moving in a lazy line,
There is a golden moon between them.
Cast iron armor lies on the hill,
The spear is crushed, the glove is damask steel,
And a shield under a rusty helmet,
The spurs stuck into the moist moss:
They lie motionless, and the moon horns
Above them in a bloody blaze.
The strong man's friend, the horse, goes around the hill;
The fire in the eyes of the proud has dimmed,
He bows his head scoldingly.
A careless hoof beats the stone of the valleys -
And looks at the armor - there is only one faithful horse
And it trembles and groans wildly.
Lost in the darkness, the alien walks
With hope he carries timidity in his heart -
Bending over the road stick,
He climbed the hill, and into the dim distance
He looks and goes - and the ringing steel
Pushes with a tired foot.
The alien grows cold, the chain mail sounds.
The bones of the deceased rattle menacingly in them,
Rolled like a shell over the stones,
A skull was hidden in it... with a dull sound
The zealous horse neighed, galloped up the hill in flight -
He looked... and bowed his head.
Already the traveler wanders far away in the darkness at night,
It seems like bones are crunching under your feet...
But the morning star brings out -
Slain in battle lies on the hill,
And the armor is motionless, and the helmet does not knock,
And the horse walks around the deceased.
