И никто не сыщет моего следа
Кущи господина, сени госпожи
Вертоград зеленый, столп родной межи
Поле, где доила я веселых коз
Ложе, где так много пролила я слез
И очаг домашний и святой олтарь
Все прости на веки говорит Агарь
И ее в пустыню дух вражды влечет
И пустыня словно вся за ней идет
И вперед заходит и со всех сторон
Ей грозит и душит, как тяжелый сон
Серые каменья, лава и песок
Под лучами солнца жжет подошвы ног
Пальм высоких листья сухо шелестят
Тени без прохлады по лицу скользят
И в лицо ей ветер дышит горячо
И кувшин ей давит смуглое плечо
Сердце замирает, ноги устают
Слезы высыхают и опять текут
Чу! вдали журчанье ключевой воды
По краям оврага свежие следы
Знать недавно пастырь здесь прогнал стада
Вот скамья и желоб, зелень и вода
И слагая ношу, села отдыхать
Бывшая рабыня — будущая мать
И страшась пустыни, и боясь пути
И незная, где ей спутника найти
Головой поникла, с тайною мольбой
Вдруг как-будто с ветром сладостью живой
Голос не воздушный, но и не земной
Прозвучал в пустыне, говоря с душой
И она очнулась, слушая глядит
Видит Ангел Божий перед ней стоит
Белая одежда, белое крыло
Кроткое сиянье строгое чело
«Ты куда!» — спросил он, — я иду в Кадис!»
И сказал ей ангел: «С миром возвратись!»
«Я бегу от Сарры, госпожи моей!»
И сказал ей ангел: «примирися с ней!
И родишь ты сына, силу многих сил,
Наречешь ты имя ему Измаил
И рука Господня будет вечно с ним
Населятся страны семенем твоим».
И с отрадой в сердце начала вставать
Бывшая рабыня, будущая мать.
