Winter Songs - Winter by William Shakespeare -

William Shakespeare

Winter

(From "Love's Labour's Lost")

When icicles hang by the wall,
And Dick the shepherd blows his nail,
And Tom bears logs into the hall,
And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipp’d and ways be foul,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
Tu-whit;
Tu-who, a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

When all aloud the wind doth blow,
And coughing drowns the parson’s saw,
And birds sit brooding in the snow,
And Marion’s nose looks red and raw,
When roasted crabs hiss in the bowl,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
Tu-whit;
Tu-who, a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

WINTER

(From the comedy "Virgin Efforts of Love")

When the haywaters in icicles,
And blow in the hands in the yard
And Tom brings firewood to the hall,
And the milk in the bucket is freezing,
And blood grows up, and everywhere dirt,
It starts a raw, in the darkness to beasting:
Tu-gu!
Tu-Tu, Tu-gu! Well, Pevun!
All in Sal, Anna Trembling Chugun.

When from coughing parishioners
No overwhelming words can be heard
And the birds are huddled in Buran,
And Maryana has a bugr nose,
And the pears in boiling water pimples,
Filin starts in the distance:
Tu-gu!
Tu-Tu, Tu-gu! Well, Pevun!
All in Sal, Anna Trembling Chugun.
