А после двенадцати, к часу ночи, в полную тишь, случилось так,
Что в дом внезапно, с жестокой силой ударил ярый грозный вихрь,
Объял весь дом железной рукой, как если б всем готовил погибель,
Как если б хотел сокрушить и дом, и в доме любое дыханье.
Студенты в страхе вскочили с постели, думая, всем настал конец.
Принялись ободрять один другого, выйти за дверь никто не смел.
И каждый слышал, томясь душой, леденящие сердце свист и шипенье.
Казалось, дом был полон ужей, гадюк и прочих мерзких гадов.
Тут дверь к Фаусту открылась с громом, он закричал: "На помощь! Караул!".
Но голос хриплый был слышен слабо, и все слабей, и вскоре Фауст умолк.
Друзья решились войти к несчастному, только когда забрезжил день.
Но Фауста не было, пусто всё. Лишь всюду в тёмных брызгах кровь.
Да в белых налипших сгустках мозг, что Диавол Фауста тряс, швыряя нещадно о стены.
И тут же рассыпаны зубы Фауста, и тут же глаза...
А тело Фауста сыскалось после.
Валялось страшное на смрадной куче среди скотного двора.
Побиты руки, как плети ноги,
А голова туда-сюда мотается.

Но голос хриплый был слышен слабо, и все слабей, и вскоре Фауст умолк.
Друзья решились войти к несчастному, только когда забрезжил день.
Но Фауста не было, пусто всё. Лишь всюду в тёмных брызгах кровь.
