СОФРОНИЕВО-МОЛЧЕНСКАЯ ПЕЧЕРСКАЯ МУЖСКАЯ ОБЩЕЖИТЕЛЬНАЯ ПУСТЫНЬ
История этой обители уходит корнями в седую старину. Существует предание об основании пустыни монахами Киево-Печерской Лавры, покинувшими Киев после разорения его монголо-татарами в 1240 году. По другим источникам, первыми монахами, ступившими на эту землю в ХІ ст., были «черноризцы» из Греции. На восточных склонах Чудной горы были вырыты пещеры, подобные знаменитым пещерам Киево-Печерской Лавры. Самые древние из них датируются ХІІІ-ХІV вв.
Сначала иноки вырыли пещеры для уединения и молитв, а потом их последователи стали обустраивать Печерский монастырь. В начале ХV века Господу было угодно прославить это место явлением чудотворной иконы Пресвятой Богородицы. 1 октября (18 сентября по старому стилю) 1405 года бортник, собиратель мёда диких пчёл, осматривая ульи, внезапно увидел необычное сияние на дереве. Подойдя ближе, он разглядел на дереве икону Пресвятой Богородицы. Поклонившись ей до земли, услышал голос: «Да построится на сем месте церковь Пречистой Богородицы».
Бортник поспешил в Путивль, чтобы известить духовенство и городские власти о случившемся. К указанному месту из Путивля двинулся крестный ход. Во время отправления молебна произошло много чудес и исцелений. В скором времени на месте явления была срублена часовня, куда и была помещена икона.
По велению великого князя московского Василия Дмитриевича и благословению митрополита и всея Руси Киприана на месте часовни была сооружена деревянная церковь.
Софрониево-Молченская Печерская мужская общжительная пустынь находится в 20 км от Путивля, в лесу на горе Чудной, в северо-западной части монастыря находилось болото Молче, поэтому он и стал называться Молченским.
Удалённая от крупных населённых пунктов, Молченская пустынь часто подвергалась разграблению и разорению. В 1605 году обитель была разорена поляками. Настоятель пустыни игумен Пафнутий с немногочисленной братией переселился в Путивль, в городской монастырь. Все иконы, в том числе и явленная чудотворная, и вся церковная утварь были переправлены туда же. Все угодья отошли к Путивльскому монастырю. В 1653 году путивльскому воеводе пришла грамота от царя Алексея Михайловича об устроении древней Молченской пустыни, 1656 году произошло событие, изменившее судьбу пустыни: ее настоятелем стал отец Софроний, имя которого впоследствии получит возрождённый монастырь.
