Слова Проповедующего в собрании, сына Давидова, царя в Иерусалиме:
Суета сует, - сказал Проповедующий, - суета сует: всё суета.
Что пользы человеку от всех его трудов, над чем он трудится под солнцем?
Род уходит, и род приходит, а Земля остается навек.
Восходит солнце, и заходит солнце, и на место свое поспешает,
Чтобы там опять взойти;
Бежит на юг и кружит на север, кружит, кружит на бегу своем ветер,
И на круги свои возвращается ветер;
Бегут все реки в море, - а море не переполнится,
К месту, куда реки бегут, -
Туда они продолжают бежать;
Всё - одна маята, и никто рассказать не умеет, -
Глядят, не пресытятся очи, слушают, не переполнятся уши.
Что было, то и будет, и что творилось, то творится,
И нет ничего нового под солнцем.
Бывает, скажут о чем-то: смотри, это новость!
А уже было оно в веках, что прошли до нас.
Не помнят о прежнем - так и о том, что будет, -
О нем не вспомнят те, кто будут позднее.
Я, Проповедующий, царил над Израилем в Иерусалиме,
И предал я сердце тому, чтобы мудростью изучить и изведать
Всё, что делается под небесами:
Тяжкую задачу дал бог решать сынам человека!
Видел я все дела, что делаются под солнцем,
И вот - всё это тщета и ловля ветра:
Кривое нельзя расправить, и чего нет, нельзя исчислить!
Сам себе промолвил я так:
Вот я мудрость свою умножил более всех,
Кто был до меня над Иерусалимом,
И много видело сердце мое и мудрости и знанья.
Так предам же я сердце тому, чтобы мудрость познать,
Но познать и безумье, и глупость, -
Я узнал, что и это - пустое томленье,
Ибо от многой мудрости много скорби,
И умножающий знанье умножает печаль.

The sun rises, and the sun comes in, and it hurries to its place,

He runs south and circles north, circles, circles the wind on his run,
And the wind returns to its circles;
All rivers run into the sea - and the sea will not be overflated,
To the place where the rivers are running, -
They continue to run there;
Everything is one on Mayat, and no one can tell, -
They look, the eyes will not be fed, they listen, the ears will not be overwhelmed.
What happened will be, and what was happening, it is going on,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
It happens, they will say about something: look, this is news!
And it was already for centuries that they passed before us.

God gave a difficult task to solve the sons of man!

Crooked cannot be straightened, and what is not, you cannot calculate!
I said this to myself:
So I multiplied my wisdom more than anyone
Who was over me over Jerusalem,
And my heart and wisdom and knowledge saw a lot.
So I will betray my heart to know wisdom,
But to know both madness and stupidity -
I found out that this is an empty languor,
For from many wisdom there are a lot of sorrow,
And multiplying knowledge multiplies sadness.
