Причины Катаклизма, расколовшего мир на аллоды, - ещё один повод для споров, на этот раз споров магов и учёных. Официальной считается позиция, высказанная Конклавом Великих магов и объясняющая Катаклизм самой природой мироустройства:
«…Истоком всему был астрал – магическая субстанция, несущая в себе созидающее и разрушающее начало, что суть одно и то же. Разрушая, созидаю; творю обречённое на уничтожение из осколков старого – вот принцип астрала.
Сарнаут – один из этапов существования астрала, олицетворение того периода, когда Творчество взяло верх над Разрушением. Так из астрала появился мир, который позже существа его населявшие назвали Сарнаутом. Что означает это слово – уже никто не знает, да это и неважно, это просто ещё одно название проявления астрала.
Со временем созидающее начало стало слабеть, обретала силу разрушающая ипостась астрала, и мир был бы обречён на гибель, если бы не вмешательство магов, сумевших остановить энтропию и поддерживающих мир в состоянии хрупкого равновесия, не давая Сарнауту погибнуть окончательно. В этом великая миссия магов, сумевших взять под контроль астральную стихию и поставивших её на службу всем, кто живёт на Сарнауте...»
