"Мирным" зваться нельзя мне;
"Радостным" думал я быть,
но "Скорбный" – вот моё имя.
"Волк", – это был отец мой;
с сестрой я родился, –
близнецами были мы с ней.
Мать вскоре же я потерял,
а с ней и ту, кто со мной родилась;
мне их не вспомнить теперь.
Волк был силён, отважен;
врагов он много имел.
С собою сына он брал на охоту;
однажды домой
мы с травли пришли, –
а волчий дом был пуст.
Дотла сгорел сверкающий зал,
и пнём наш дуб цветущий стоял;
лежала убитой мать на земле,
исчезла бесследно в огне сестра:
нам столько бед принёс
злых Нейдингов мрачный род.
Бежал со мной гонимый отец;
в дикой чаще юноша прожил
со старым немало лет;
часто их пытались схватить,
но храбро пара волков дралась!

Волчонка видишь ты здесь,
а Волчонка знают враги!

I can’t remember them now.
The wolf was strong, courageous;
He had a lot of enemies.
He took to hunt with his son;
Once home
We came from persecution, -
And the wolf house was empty.
A sparkling hall burned down to the ground,
And we stuck our oak blooming;
lay the murdered mother on the ground,
Sister disappeared without a trace in the fire:
I brought us so many troubles
Evil Neingians are gloomy.
The persecuted father ran with me;
In Wild more often the young man lived
with the old many years;
Often they tried to grab them,
But bravely a couple of wolves fought!
