Acquainted With the Night
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height
One luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

Whether far away an interrupted crry
Came Over Houses from Another Street,
But not to Call Me Back or Say Good-Bye;
And Further Still at An Unearthly Height
One Luminary Clock Against the Sky
ProClaimed the Time Was Neither Wrong Nor Right.
I have been One Acquainted with the Night.
Acquaintance with the night
I am the one who was familiar with the night.
I went out in the rain and returned to the rain.
With the last city pillar
He crushed in his sadness.
I have passed the sentry
In silence, he did not turn around.
I interrupted the noise of my steps,
When some cry came down
From distant streets, but I knew
That he did not call and did not say goodbye.
I still stood later,
And the star dial swayed,
But there was no shooter on him.
I am the one who was familiar with the night.
I have been One Acquainted with the Night.
I have Walked Out in Rain - and Back in Rain.
