(1) Лучше (доброе) имя, чем добрый елей, а день смерти (лучше) дня рождения. (2) Лучше пойти в дом скорби, чем пойти в дом пира, ибо таков конец каждого человека, и живой пусть обратит внимание. (3) Лучше скорбь, чем смех, ибо, когда печалится лицо, добреет сердце. (4) Сердце мудрых в доме скорби, а сердце глупых – в доме веселья. (5) Лучше выслушать порицание мудрого, чем слушать человеку песню глупцов. (6) Ибо как треск (горящих) терниев под котлом, так и смех глупца; и это тоже суета. (7) Притесняя, мудрый лишается разума, а подношения губят сердце. (8) Конец дела лучше его начала; а терпеливый лучше горделивого. (9) Не спеши гневаться, ибо гнев обитает в груди глупцов. (10) Не говори – "Как случилось, что прежние дни были лучше этих," ибо не от мудрости спросил ты об этом. (11) Хороша мудрость вместе с наследием – на пользу для видящих солнце. (12) Потому что под сенью мудрости – (как) под сенью серебра, а польза знания (ясна): мудрость сохраняет жизнь владеющего ею. (13) Посмотри на деяния Б-га; разве кто может выпрямить то, что Он искривил? (14) В день благой радуйся, а в день несчастья – узри: и то, и другое, сделал Б-г, как говорят, для того, чтобы человек ничего не мог постичь после Него. (15) Всего насмотрелся я в суетные дни мои: есть праведник, гибнущий в праведности своей, и есть нечестивец долговечный в своем нечестье. (16) Не будь слишком праведным, и не слишком мудрствуй: зачем тебе быть удрученным? (17) Не слишком греши, и не будь глупцом – зачем тебе умирать безвременно? (18) Хорошо, если ты придерживаешься одного, но и от другого не отнимаешь руки; потому что Б-гобоязненный ладит со всеми. (19) Мудрость усилит мудрого больше, чем десять правителей, бывших в городе. (20) Ибо нет на земле такого праведника, который творил бы благо и не погрешил бы. (21) И не на всякое слово, что говорят, обращай внимание, дабы не услышать, как раб твой тебя проклинает. (22) Ибо сердце твое знает, что много раз и сам ты проклинал других. (23) Все это испытал я мудростью; подумал я: "стану мудрым"; но мудрость далека от меня. (24) Далеко то, что было, и глубоко, глубоко: кто его постигнет? (25) Обратился я сердцем моим к тому, чтоб узнать и разведать и изыскать мудрость и замысел, дабы познать, что нечестие – глупо, а глупость – безумие. (26) И нахожу я, что горше смерти женщина, потому что она – западня, и сердце ее – тенета, руки ее – оковы; угодный Б-гу от нее убежит, а грешник – ей попадется. (27) Вот, что нашел я, сказал Коэлет, (сочетая) одно с другим, чтобы сделать вывод. (28) Чего еще искала душа моя и не нашел я?
